ABOUT US

Joan Liman, MD, MPH, MC
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The State University of NY at Buffalo, Joan spent her post-college years working in human resources in New York and New Jersey. She eventually went on to earn MD and MPH degrees from New York Medical College (NYMC). She spent more than two decades working in medical education, retiring in 2008 from Metropolitan Hospital in NYC.

Luckily for Joan, the only infectious disease she contracted in medical school was the theater bug as a result of her participation in the annual NYMC "Follies." However, she has been a life-long fan of musical theater for as long as she can remember. She devotes a considerable portion of her time volunteering at Amas Musical Theater, where she serves as president of its board of directors and has endowed a scholarship fund. Joan is also a board member of Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) where she actively participates in the play selection process for the annual musical reading series. In addition, Joan has invested in two off-Broadway shows, which got their start at Amas: Little Ham and Zanna, Don't.

Joan studied musical performance with Miriam Fond and is a graduate of the Commercial Theater Institute. She is also an alumnae and co-managing director of the Carole Hyatt Leadership Forum, a worldwide women's networking group that conducts professional development seminars and special events several times throughout the year. Her involvement in the Leadership Forum paved the way for an association with Tony-winning producer Michael Frazier with whom she interned during the 2002-2003 season. Joan's producing credits to date include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Manger, a country-western family musical that ran for several performances in NYC during December, 2002 and Soul to Keep, a one-woman show which had a successful run at the 2005 Midtown International Theater Festival. At Metropolitan Hospital, she produced and directed a crowd-pleasing take-off on "American Idol" during National Patient Safety Awareness Week. Dubbed "Metropolitan Idol," the show took a "Forbidden Broadway"-like approach to educating staff about national patient safety goals by using song parodies to convey important take-home messages such as the importance of hand washing in preventing infection.

Joan is currently at work on a musical memoir for which she is penning the book and lyrics, the working title of which is "A LimanAde Life." She has also written additional lyrics for a musical called Cold as Ice featuring Oksana Baiul, which premiered at Long Island's Gateway Theater in May 2007 and is now preparing for a Broadway debut. Joan is proud to be one of the women profiled in a book entitled Be Happy at Work: 100 Women Who Love Their Jobs and Why. A two-time cancer survivor, she also serves as an American Cancer Society Ambassador and took part in the 2006 Celebration on the Hill.
